The music of Midnight Reservations comes from a dark place…
Late one night in a bar in Austin, Texas, Mike Aho and Kelly Marie Aho decided to take the recent songs he’d written during the hardest time of their marriage and turn them into duets. Mike is a multi-instrumentalist and producer and Kelly Marie had never even sung into a microphone. What came next was a 3-year journey of discovery, struggle and reimagined-love which manifested in a record that hovers in some vaguely nostalgic make-believe world. A world, it seems, they invented as escapism.
“Call out for me, I’ll call out for you”, they hauntingly sing on ‘Ancient Love’. The two have an unbelievable story, having met when they were 12 years old, they instantly felt an intense connection and have been together ever since.
Midnight Reservations was written, performed and produced almost entirely by Mike, meticulously sculpting every sound-scape, playing nearly every instrument and recorded primarily at home using everything from tape machines to laptop beats. The true beauty, however, lives in the evolution of the songs themselves, as they took on new life and optimism throughout the recording process
